When someone offers you a piece of jewellery or you buy it for yourself, it usually has a deep meaning. It symbolizes some achievement, some special feeling. So, you want to make sure that you take care of all your jewellery pieces.

Here are some things that you should take into account:

#1: Be careful with heat and light:

You know the harmful effects that sun’s rays can have on your skin. And this is what happens when your jewellery is exposed to heat and light. It can easily affect the color and durability of the gemstones including amethyst, topaz, kunzite, and shell cameos. In the case of pearls, they will then to bleach, while some other gems like amber, can get darker over time.

In terms of the heat, the extreme heat can lead pearls to even crack. In the case of opals, for example, they can also develop some cracks and even turn from white into brown.

#2: Keep your jewellery away from chemicals:

It’s not enough to remove your jewellery when you’re cleaning your home. You should also pay attention to the products you use on a daily basis that usually contain chemicals like perfume, lotion, hairspray, and some other cosmetics.

These chemicals can permanently damage your gemstones like the turquoise or the pearls.

#3: Ultrasonic cleaners should be used with caution:

There are many different ultrasonic cleaners for sale out there that promise to keep all your jewellery as brand new. However, you should never use them to clean:

– organic gem materials like coral, pearls, amber, or ivory;

– gemstones that have a surface-reaching break and that have been previously filled with glass-like material, resin, or oil;

– some gemstones that are treated with heat;

– gems that have already been coated with a non-permanent wax or plastic.

As if this wasn’t enough for you to be careful when you use an ultrasonic cleaner, you need to be aware that the vibration of the machine may make gems loose. So, when it’s time to clean your jewellery, make sure that you see a professional. If you just want to take care of it yourself, most coloured gems can be easily cleaned using a soft brush, mild dish soap and warm water.

#4: Safely store your jewellery:

This is usually one of the most overlook things in what comes to jewellery. However, it’s extremely important or you might end up with damaged and scratched gems.

One of the best places to keep your jewellery is actually on the pouch or box that came from the store. Whenever you are traveling and want to take your jewellery with you, make sure that you pad it well and place it in a separate case or box to make sure that it does not suffer any impact damage or any scratches.
